North Iceland – itinerary
Day 1
9.10 pm – Wizzair flight from Warsaw to Keflavik – 4h30 (due to strong wind).
Covid vaccination certificates and antigen tests (adults only) and registration at www.covid.is are checked at the airport in Warsaw and Keflavik.
From the airport, we take a minibus to the PROCAR – rental of Mazda 3 for 3 days for around 250 euros. Gasoline 95 1l for about 260 ISK (you can get cheaper between 220-240 ISK). We take the express road to Reykjavik and spend the night in the “Igdlo Guesthouse” – 80.31 euros – room for 4 people with shared bathroom.
Day 2
We make breakfast ourselves (products brought from Poland) and we go to the center of Reykjavik.
We visit the iceberg-shaped Hallgrimskirkja church (free) and stroll the streets of old Reykjavik – we see the sculpture “Sun Voyager” on the waterfront and the modern Philharmonic “Harpa”.
We go to the “Bonus” store – one of the cheapest in Iceland – 1 liter of juice for 129 ISK, muesli for 298 ISK, milk 169 ISK, Arctic bread (5 pieces for 159 ISK), small skyr for 198 ISK, and large ones for 419 ISK, humus for 379 ISK, Appelsin for 159 ISK. In the “Vinbudin” shop we buy a bottle of wine for 1500 ISK.
We take road 42 to Krysuvik (geothermal area – hot springs) on the Reykjanes peninsula and then to parking C near the currently active volcano Fagradalsfjall (parking fee 1000 ISK – you can pay by card via www.parka.is). Near the parking lot there is a place where you can drink or eat something (you can pay by card). We follow trail C to the lava field (solidified lava) and then to the viewpoint from which you can see the volcano’s crater. We go to the “Blue Lagoon” thermal pools – we watch only from the outside (Comfort package for 8,990 ISK – including a mask and a drink) – everything is well maintained and then we head towards Reykjavik.
We eat lunch at a restaurant at IKEA in Gardabaer near Reykjavik – 15 meatballs with potatoes and sauce for 1095 ISK (10 for 895 ISK), vegetable soup with lamb for 495 ISK, small wine for 595 ISK, almond cake for 245 ISK, Appelsin for 150 ISK, bread with salmon for 795 ISK, coffee for 175 ISK – together we pay 8220 ISK.
We go to the Árbæjarlaug swimming pool in Reykjavik – 2450 ISK for 4 people (adult 1060 ISK and child 165 ISK) – outdoor pools with several hot tubs (with water from 38 to 42 degrees C), cold water, slides and saunas – good place to observe Icelanders.
We take road 1 to Akureyri – Hvalfjörður tunnel (free) along the way and nice views of the snow-capped mountains around Akureyri. Overnight in Akureyri at “Steinaskjol Apartments” – 207 euro for 2 nights – 2 rooms with kitchen and bathroom – good conditions, located in the city center.
Day 3
In the morning we make breakfast ourselves – muesli, skyr, bread, cheese. We take road no. 1 – pass the tunnel on road no. 84 – to the Godafoss waterfall – near the road, small but nicely situated.
We go to Dimmuborgir – the path “Kirkja” about 2 km along various types of lava formations, and then to Hverir – a geothermal area with fumaroles, geysers and colored earth. On the way to the Dettifoss waterfall – we drive to Krafla – you can drive your car to the viewpoint on the Viti crater with the lake. Access road 862 is entirely paved – from the parking lot you go to the viewpoint over the Dettifoss waterfall and the Asbyrgi canyon – Dettifoss is one of the most interesting waterfalls in Iceland.
We have lunch at N1 station in Asbyrgi – fish & chips for ISK 2,200, cheeseburger with fries for ISK 1,990, chicken burger for ISK 1,895, Appelsin for ISK 350, coffee for ISK 395 – together we pay ISK 9,425. We go along road no. 85 to Husavik – viewpoints on the cliffs along the way. In Husavik you can go whale watching (around 10,000 ISK per person) – in Husavik there is a small port and an atmospheric waterfront. We go to the thermal pools “Myvatn Nature Baths” – entrance ISK 5700 / adult and ISK 2700 / child – large thermal pools with saunas and a bar (a glass of wine ISK 1200, Appelsin ISK 350 – you can pay by card) – the pools have a nice view of the area.
We return to Akureyri by road No. 1 and through the 7.5 km long Vaðlaheiðargöng tunnel (fee 1500 ISK – must be paid 24 hours before or 3 hours after the trip – you pay by card via the website www.tunnel.is).
Day 4
In the morning we make breakfast ourselves. We walk around Akureyri – a Lutheran church on a hill and a botanical garden (free entry).
We go to Tröllaskagi, i.e. the Troll Peninsula – along the way, cliffs and fjords, tunnels begin from Ólafsfjörður, including Héðinsfjarðargöng with a length of over 7 km (a single-lane part of the tunnel with bays to pass). We visit Siglufjörður, where scenes for the Icelandic Netflix series “Trapped” were filmed, and we watch one of the most beautiful swimming pools in Iceland located by the fjord in Hofsos.
We take road 1 to Reykjavik and have lunch at a restaurant at IKEA – 15 meatballs with potatoes for 1095 ISK, bread with salmon for 795 ISK.
We are going to the Grafarvogslaug swimming pool in Reykjavik – 2450 ISK for 4 people – outdoor pools with hot tubs, slides and saunas. We go to the center of Reykjavik and eat hot dogs at Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur (the most famous and the best in Iceland) – 550 ISK a piece. We go to the rental agency to return the car and refuel at the “Orkan” station in Fitjar – ISK 245 for 1 liter of 95.
From the rental agency we go to the airport in Keflavik and at 12.05 am we depart to Warsaw – 3h40.
